Album Review

Though time had passed since his Real World apprenticeship, the Peter Gabriel influence looms larger than ever on Joseph Arthur's third release. In particular, Redemption's Son achieves a sophisticated marriage of traditional songwriting craft and avant-garde production, a combination that guides Gabriel's best work as well. The singer/songwriter foundation is clearer with Arthur, however; many of these tracks grow from a bedrock of acoustic guitar and vocals, with gauzy electronics shimmering across the surface rather than glistening within the fabric of the tune. Aside from a few inspired images, such as his admission that "I've been so happy being unhappy with you" in "Favorite Girl," Arthur's writing is steady and workmanlike; by giving prominent position to lines like "I wish I could follow you to the shore of freedom," from "Honey and the Moon," he tends to build in the verses toward slightly disappointing resolutions in the choruses. Even so, the sonic range achieved on these tracks, ranging from a filmy folk-rock evocation on "Dear Lord" to the collision of "Strawberry Fields" Mellotron and Duane Eddy twang on "I Would Rather Hide," suggests that Arthur may have even more promise as a producer than as an artist in years to come. ~ Robert L. Utterly astounding; a work of art.

I think the last time I was this blown away by a singer/songwriter was when I heard Duncan Sheik's debut album, and/or when one of my closest friends turned me on to Nick Drake's music many years ago. Only someone with a heart/mind of stone could listen to this CD and not be moved profoundly. I was turned on to Joseph's music by the snippet of music from "Honey & the Moon" that was used toward the end of the 3rd American Pie movie...took immediate notice of it, got on iTunes here, started reading everyone's rave reviews & downloaded it immediately. Joseph is an amazing musician of great depth & originality, just like the 2 musicians I mentioned earlier. Having been knocked out by this CD, I fully intend to explore his other stuff and fervently hope he will be down San Diego way next time he tours. My favorite track here is one that no one has mentioned so far--the incredibly lovely & hypnotic "Termite Song," in spite of its unappealing title. Just gorgeous from start to finish...it's one of those songs that ends up on repeat frequently, along with other classics from my past like Oasis' "Champagne Supernova," the title track from Death Cab For Cutie's TRANSATLANTICISM, or Jade Warrior's "Lady of the Lake/Borne Onto the Solar Wind." The only misfire on the CD, IMHO, is "Dear Lord," which, for me, was just a little too much on the saccharine side, in the same way that "Walk of Life" detracted from the beauty of Dire Straits' BROTHERS IN ARMS album. But who knows?--maybe in time it'll grow on me, too. For now, take my word for it: this album deserves all the attention and accolades it can get. In this particular genre of music--something this sad, commercialized world could use a LOT more of--it just doesn't get any better than this. Bravo, Joseph.

Great album!
