Stunning rendition of a masterpiece
by k-whaleThis, to me, is the most definitive recording of the Requiem I have found to this day. Some reviewers have (rightly) pointed out that the individual parts stand out too much at times, but this is precisely one the things that makes this arrangement so powerful. It does not sound overly polished (to the point of 'sameness'), something which many classical recordings suffer from. The use of the boys choir is absolutely essential, too, in creating a more profound listening experience; one that takes the listener beyond hearing the skill and proficiency of the trained musicians. Simply breathtaking.
Not as good as I expected.
by lvb2555Don't get me wrong, this is a good performace. But I've heard far, far better. The balance is skewed beyond belief. I have listened to many different performances of Requiem, but this is near the bottom as far as listening pleasure I received from it. It sounds as if it was done with a 16 person choir and a single instrument for each orchestral track. The choir doesn't blend enough, it's much to easy to pick out individual voices, and at times the orchestra over power the voices, or altos will be doubly too powerful. I enjoy the fact they used children, or what sounds like children, for an authentic period sound, the male altos can seem to be clearly heard, and I believe I also hear male sopranos, but I can't be sure, the falsetto if it is, is quite good. Like I said, don't get me wrong, this is a good performance, it's just fails in term of equalization during recording, and it feels as if they used the bare bones of an orchestra. Dynamics are well executed. Overall, a good performance, just some sound equalization issues. If this is how it's supposed to sound, regarding period acoustics, then that's fine, it's just not what I'm used to.
This Version, is a Vision
by theghostoftomjoad2323MRequiem in D minor--a monumental testament to and of all art, of sweet life and of inevitable death. Herr Mozart conceived and completed a surreal, super-human masterpiece of unfailing vision, grace, depth and maturity that is at once, all too simple and revealing yet veiled in a mysterious, blissful shroud of conception. Mozart drew from stylings of Gregorian chant and Bach, manifesting into an eternal and total glory this side of the universe. Hogwood and the AoAM, again, accurately recreate an authentic, non-pretending, pitch-perfect and therefore near-perfect vision of the music that Mozart heard and to which we listen. (Warning: may induce the chills)!
Now, if you're going for two versions of this composition Karajan's '87-transfer (making use of Sussmayr's fill-ins) is quite sensual and moving as well.
--Utterly Recommended.
