Album Review

The "rock" revival of the early 2000s sent record labels into a tizzy; everyone went looking for their own version of the Hives, the Vines, the Stripes, and so forth. It was a good time to be in a rock band and a good time to be a fan of rock music. Electronica label Astralwerks' entry in the rock sweepstakes was the Caesars, who hail from rock hotbed Sweden and used to be called the Twelve Caesars. They released a record in 1998 for Minty Fresh, and seven of the 12 songs on 39 Minutes of Bliss (In an Otherwise Meaningless World) were also on that disc. They play semimelodic, garage rock-influenced rock with some notable hooks (the chorus of "Crackin' Up," the good cover of the Endd's "Out of My Hands," the blippy organ on the peppy "Jerk It Out").

This is my hands down favorite Caesars album. Despite their hit "Jerk It Out" the rest of the album is fantastic, dare I say better than the single. If you're one for dancing around in your room with the stereo blasting then the Caesars are for you. Since this is also one of my top 5 favorite albums of all time I highly recommend you give em' a chance.

....Rrrrrghh.

A friend of mine recommended this album to me by stating that it was 'original' and 'unique'. I am a true fan of unique music and avoid the radio as much as possible. For all of you that think this album is unique, I agree. It is unique for the radio. But for all music outside that small bubble of musical naivety it is extremely cliche and all has been done long before even the new wave era. I cannot help but imagine The Doors when I hear this album. Especially on Jerk it Out. Wow, a song about m**********n. So brave, so controversial, So new! Sorry but if any of you want something new, just know that alternative now means "Like the Radio". In fact, alternative meant 'different than the commercial hits' back in the 90's; back when the genre previously fit the definition.

Anything in 4/4, around 120 bpm, and in a rock pentatonic or even the modes has just about been done. Especially with the typical rock ensemble. My advice, if you want something different, try some progressive rock. Maybe even Jazz or World. -This review is going to upset quite a bit of people but before every body marks me as unhelpful, I'm trying to help you out. Reviews always need a devils advocate.

This honestly is nothing against the consumers. If this is the music you like, go for it! This is only one persons opinion. I'm only helping out the ones exploring new genres. One star because I dislike it.
