“Lord, why is it that I go through so much pain?” DMX asks in one of the “skits” peppered throughout It’s Dark and Hell It’s Hot, his first album for Def Jam CK. While not as solemn as the rapper’s later albums in its insistent view of the doomed side of the small-time gangsta life, It’s Dark isn’t exactly a joyful set, either. “How can I maintain with mad s--- on my brain?” DMX ponders on the ostensibly celebratory “Ruff Riders Anthem.” “For My Dogs” acknowledges a “death wish that ain’t been granted yet,” and “Crime Story” — one of the most vivid tracks and performances here — ends with suicide by cop. Also, as fine as X’s flow is, his true appeal lies in a conversational, sometimes nearly deadened delivery that itself speaks of moral conflict and, often, a lack of real pleasure in his tales.

Start of a bloodline
by b34bernieThis is the CD that started the bloodline, and it has been AWESOME!!! I bought it when I saw the Ruff Ryders Anthem on MTV...Been an X fan ever since! The prayers are the best and seamless transitions between songs.
No hip hop fan should be without it.
