Album Review
Louder Than Words was the official comeback, the long-awaited return to recording from Lionel Richie, one of the most successful pop stars of the '80s. Perhaps it was inevitable that returning to recording would be difficult — after all, it had been 10 years since he had released an album of original material — but Louder Than Words turned out to be a bigger disappointment than anyone expected, failing to deliver either musically or commercially. Its failure helped clear the decks for Time, Richie's true musical comeback. Time doesn't quite match the heights of Lionel Richie or Can't Slow Down, but it successfully updates his familiar concoction of sweet, seductive ballads and light funk for the late '90s. Whenever he incorporates light hip-hop rhythms here, it sounds less forced, and the dance numbers are often infectious. Similarly, the ballads have strong (albeit sappy) hooks that make them memorable. Don't take Richie's belated version of "Lady," the hit he gave Kenny Rogers, as a bad sign — Time is the most satisfying effort he has released in quite some time.

Time
by CicelLionel Richies best album in the 90's was Time. Time shows a side of Lionel Richie that the world didn't see in the 80's. The album shows a HipHop side of him. Time is truly an album that appeals to the masses.
Lionel's TIME album is no match to back in TIME!
by impresarioLionel's sixth official solo effort was a moderate success compared to his earlier work. Here, he mostly teams up with one familiar face that he had worked with before. David Foster is that guy. Foster worked with Lionel in his 1983 classic album 'Can't slow down.' In 'Time,' a song like 'I hear your voice,' co-written with Foster takes Lionel back to his 'Hello' days. It's a cool ballad. Another collaborator here is hit-song writer Dianne Warren whose ‘The closest thing to haven’ takes a tough critic straight to hell. It is a disappointing effort for someone who wrote Toni Braxton’s Grammy winning hit ‘Un-break my heart.’ It’s like Warren was just trying to add a needed song in an incomplete album hoping that David’s Foster’s (He produced it) talent and Lionel’s vocal skills could alone carry that song. Other songs like 'That's the way I feel' simply imitates 'Nothing else matters' in Lionel's 1996 'Louder than words' album. The title track 'Time' failed to carry the album. It’s like Lionel wondered around and run into one of the ‘The Commodores’ guys and tried to record a song together with him called ‘Time.’ It could have been written and recorded by any washed out 1970’s R&B crooner still out there. So you end up with 'Lady,' the final track. 'Lady' is actually a remake of Lionel's hit that he wrote for country legend Kenny Rogers in 1980. 'Lady' by Rogers hit number one worldwide and together with 'Endless Love' which Lionel sang with Diana Ross for the motion picture of the same title, propelled Lionel to a successful solo career. Lionel’s version is slightly different but it could have been a bigger hit had he released it for himself in the 80's. Overall, if you are not a Lionel Richie die hard like me, I say get his earlier work like the 1982 'Lionel Richie' the album with hits like 'You are' and 'Truly,' definitely get his 1983 timeless classic masterpiece 'Can't slow down' which includes his #1 hits like 'All night long' and 'Hello' and finally his 1986 ‘Dancing on the ceiling’ album which carries the Oscar winning hit ‘Say you say me.’ Those three masterpieces have signature songs to last a lifetime.
