Album Review

Building Nothing Out of Something collects Modest Mouse singles and rare tracks from the group's indie-label years, including the studio tracks from the Interstate 8 EP and their contributions to the Sub Pop Singles Club. Despite the songs' motley origins, Building Nothing Out of Something works well as an album, balancing the group's quirky and often poignant pop songs with their more abrasive rock side. The wonderfully dreamy, off-kilter "Interstate 8" and "Workin' on Leavin' the Livin'" (which cleverly quotes Eraserhead's "Lady in the Radiator Song") are two shining examples of the group's elastic, loopy guitar pop, while "All Nite Diner," "A Life of Arctic Sounds," and "Other People's Lives" define their high-strung rock sound. Slower songs like "Grey Ice Water" and the Santo & Johnny homage "Sleepwalkin'" round out this look at Modest Mouse's diverse but consistently worthwhile indie output.

It always amazed me that even a collection of B Sides and outtakes by this band could flow with such continuity that you might mistake it for a concept album. This was my first Modest Mouse album and like a previous poster it took a long time to grow on me. But as it did, so did my appetite for more Modest Mouse. If you're trying to get the difference between old modest mouse and new modest mouse that everyone keeps talking about, maybe consider starting here. Then work your way into the "lonesome crowded west" and "the moon and Antarctica".

No band can describe lonesomeness like Modest Mouse

Using strong lyrics like "600 miles is a long drive inside a car" and "I'm going nowhere but I'm guarentied to be late" , and reverb slicked spirarling guitars and melodies of melancholy, Modest Mouse weaves their tales of the lonesome crowded west. It honestly makes me want to take a road trip out to Washington and just drive all around the state.

Modest Mouse takes some getting used to...

I bought this album with low expectations. I had heard of the band and many of my friends reccomended them to me. When I first put this CD in to my stereo, I had to turn it of. The sound was grating, and Issac Brock's voice was painful. It was definately not love at first listen. However, I forced myself to keep listening so I could maybe find a glimmer of what impressed my friends. The album slowly became more and more tolerable, and I began to actually like what I was hearing.

The Bottom Line: Don't give up on Modest Mouse right away. Give them a chance. You might start to LOVE what you hear.
