iTunes Review

Vancouver native Michael Bublé’s assured debut and a year of ceaseless touring quickly established him as a modern young crooner to contend with. The singer’s fine take on “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” addresses the Sinatra fixations that perpetually hang over the genre head on, while he distinguishes his own talents on often playful versions of “Feeling Good,” “Try a Little Tenderness,” and “A Foggy Day in London Town.” But like Bublé hero Bobby Darin, the singer never lets himself get too musically complacent, even if some of his forceful genre-bending is more successful (a gorgeous take on Leon Russell’s “A Song For You,” Holland-Dozier-Holland’s “How Sweet It Is” as bluesy vamp) than others (Lennon-McCartney’s “Can’t Buy Me Love” as ring-a-ding fling, a Euro-slick duet with Nelli Furtado on “Quando, Quando, Quando”). Meanwhile, guest arranger/producer Tommy LiPuma offers the singer a stellar jazz spotlight on “The More I See of You,” outclassing much of the balance of David Foster’s typically over-burnished production in the bargain.
