Album Review

These kids living in Brooklyn share an insanely devoted love for '60s French pop relics like Serge Gainsbourg and Jacques Brel, resulting in music that is accurately derivative albeit a bit too kitschy from time to time. If there's one thing going for them, however, it's a total mastery of the pop form. With male and female vocals and sweet harmonies, the confounding French lyrics don't seem to need a translator, just a groove. The septet is decidedly funky, and fuzzy keyboard lines mix with clean bouncy guitars for a product that's always spunky if a bit repetitive. In Les Sans Culottes' favor, it's arguable that most discerning listeners would have no trouble believing that this was created in another country almost 40 years ago. Other than a few edgier yelps and some high-tempo hipster punk changes, this group is true to its roots. All that remains to be asked is whether the bandmembers have any links to these roots or their faux French approach is just plain pretentious. ~ Peter J. D'Angelo, All Music Guide

At times brilliant, but Mostly kind of annoying

Some of the songs on this album are just brilliant. "Balzac 7502" is truly a great song as is "Sa Sabine". And knowing French does help with an appreciation of the songs that work well. However, too often the songs are more annoying than they are good. "Le coq sportif" has some good parts to it, but then midway through the song it turns into an irritating audience participation song that is so agravating that my girlfriend forbade me from ever playing the CD in the car again.

C'est Magnifique!

I love these guys! There's no need for very good understanding of french to get the point of these songs. Non Merci Oncle Sam, Ecole de M***e, Sa Sabine, etc. each incorperate english and french into a funky, poppy beat that will have you singing along (or in my case, mumbling along in butchered french.) For fans of the sort of over-produced pop studio sound, this is your album! Fixation Orale is also brilliant! Enjoy and Happy Popping!
