iTunes Review

A mind-blowing maze of complex melodies, textures, and harmonies, Frances the Mute is almost impossibly precise in its orchestration and execution. There are no songs on the album, at least in the conventional sense, just an endless movement from one idea to another, some sublime, others unbearably intense and hopelessly fragmented. Polyrhythms and countless unexpected tempo changes abound, while extended guitar, trumpet, and sax solos scream from the mix, driven by possessed drumming throughout. There are also cinematic moments where street sounds and snippets of conversation slip into the soundscape and then into the studio murk. Cedric Bixler-Zavala’s voice soars, screeches, wails, howls, and moans, and his sinister non sequitur lyrics, sung in English and Spanish, are difficult to discern much less decipher. This is no casual listen and certainly not for everyone. But for those willing to commit to absorbing 77 minutes of challenging music, there is much to reflect upon in Frances the Mute.

Best album to have ever graced my ears. Their other stuff is great but this is what every fan should have.

Progressive Rock at its apex.

Aside for some annoyingly long ambient noise on some of the tracks, especially Miranda that Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore, this album is the most impressive album I've bought.

Songs from best to worst: Cassandra Gemini (The full 32:32 minutes), Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus, L'Via L'Viaquez, The Widow, Miranda That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore.

Cassandra Gemini is long and insane enough to be its own album.

Frances the Mute exceeds De-loused in the Comatorium in almost every way, though it is less accessible due to the length of each song. If you have a good attention span when it comes to music, and you like progressive rock, buy this album. I can't see how you would be dissapointed.

Man this album just kills. The last track Cassandra Gemini is just a master peice... i can say that for all the other songs as well. They will be remembered for a long long time... it is so hard to top what they produce. They are most definatly with out a doubt, one of the best bands of this century. The musical geniuses of our generation.

Picking up the pieces from At the Drive-In, Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez formed the Mars Volta and wasted little time branching out into elements of hardcore, psychedelic rock, and free jazz that expanded on the boundaries of their previous work. Although their previous band's demise...
