Album Review
A really wacky soundtrack for what looks like a really under-produced Canadian sci-fi movie. The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets produce this odd array of quirky rock. Although fitting for a film that relies mostly on cardboard backgrounds, computer-generated aliens, and secondhand costumes — all intended for said film to fall into the "so bad it's good" category — the Darkest of the Hillside Thickets churn out a nerdy hybrid of They Might Be Giants — minus the clever humor — and an occasional Man or Astroman? — minus the hi-tech surf. Perfectly suitable for said film and Dr. Who fans, but that's as far as the appeal of sci-fi alternative rock could stretch.

Excellent
by j.h.w.The Thickets are a great band and as they've said they haven't made alot of money of of it but they keep on releasing CDs, selling merch, and doing shows. Their Lovecraft-inspired music is something worth listening to as it's very refreshing compared to alot of today's stuff. Whether you like pop-punk, indie rock, hardcore, or grunge (maybe with some tongue-in-cheek comedy), Darkest of the Hillside Thickets are for you.
DotHT Step out from Lovecraft
by the4v3ryI'll say this up-front, I am a fan of the band, though not nearly as rabid as most fans. That said, I think that several of this albums tracks are worth owning, even for pop-punk listeners that have no personal investment in the band. Furthermore, I feel that this album is DotHT's most accessible to the general audience. Not Billboard Top 100 list material by any means, but the production values here are much better than earlier albums.
Geek rock at its best.
by -J.Some bands know what it means to have fun. A strange mix somewhere among NoMeansNo, Gwar, and They Might Be Giants, this group is the perfect musical reflection of the Lovecraft sub-culture. They're weird, sometimes eldritch, sometimes annoying, but unbelievably fun.
With this release, The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets take their first step towards a coherent concept album with a higher production value. From "20 Minutes of Oxygen" on, I was pleasantly suprised with the mature immaturity of _Spaceship Zero_. The lyrics are irreverent and laced with pop culture, yet there's a strange depth to the project.
In "20 Minutes of Oxygen," a simple sci-fi scenario gathers new meaning. When Toren sings, "If you remember me / That'd be the rip-cord in my destiny," it's a disturbingly resonant lyric that can be applied to more than the song's story. Meanwhile, "Power Up" is a depressing look at superheroes in a realistic world. And "The Math Song" may be gimmicky, but it's a helluva gimmick: the verses are one long equation, and the punchline is the lyric, "What is the value of Y?"
Though their weird punk-esque stylings aren't for everyone, The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets deserve the same kind of niche market as They Might Be Giants. With quirky popular culture lyrics and infectious basslines, these Canadians should find a home in every geek's playlist.
