iTunes Review

As the most prolific songwriter of the alt-country movement, Ryan Adams is always in danger of repeating himself. There are just so many ways to tell the world your heart is broken. But Adams is such a connoisseur of rock history that he can always summon up a ghost or two to help inspire him. A double album in the old-school sense of the word - two albums that equal the length of two vinyl LPs not CDs - Cold Roses conjures up the sound of Roy Orbison leading the Eagles on a trip through the American Southwest. The stability of a dependable backing group and a producer - Ethan Johns - well-versed in both record production techniques and the mercurial ways of Adams himself, make this a consistently enjoyable listen. And Adams can write a tearjerker ("When Will You Come Back Home," "Now That You're Gone") like no one else.

The best writer of alt-country? Ever heard of Rhett Miller?

Nary a wasted track

It's not often that I think an album approaches perfection, but "Cold Roses" does! It has a bunch of absolute gems ("How Do You Keep Love Alive," "Mockingbirdsing," "Dance All Night," etc.), and then most of the rest of the album has good variety but is still of a piece with the mood it creates. And that's what makes this a rarity, too, is that it can be enjoyed either as a group of songs, or as an album.

I loved his song "New York New York", but couldn't really get into anything else. At the same time, I really didn't like anything resembling country. (I was also in a punk rut at the time). The same friend who tried pushing Ryan's earlier albums said "try this". I never stopped playing it. It is a gorgeous mix of what would be come all the genres that Ryan Adams has come to write in. Not only did it make me rediscover the rest of his catalog, it opened my eyes to other genres of music. Thank you Ryan!
