Album Review
This double CD has generally superior sound to the 1992 Sony Music release, but its more than two-hours of music may be a classic case of overkill. The essential problem is that How the West Was Won is rooted in two separate bodies of music, the Alfred Newman instrumental and orchestral material (including the rousing main title theme), spiced with a few traditional (i.e. folk) and traditional-style tunes; and the songs sung by Debbie Reynolds in her various set pieces as an entertainer, principally "Home in the Meadow" (adapted from "Greensleeves"). The Alfred Newman material generally recalls Aaron Copland's musical Americana (especially the "Lincoln Portrait") at its best and most accessible, and the folk songs handled by the choir or Dave Guard's Whiskeyhill Singers come off well — but then there are those numbers done by Reynolds, which sort of break the spell. It's not that she's a bad singer, it's just that her voice doesn't fit within the surrounding musical settings. One guesses the producers had no choice but to give full play to this part of the score, but one wishes there'd been a way around it. The annotation is very thorough, the photographs (including some behind-the-scenes shots of co-director John Ford) are a nice treat, and anyone who likes the movie or Newman's music is sure to enjoy this.

Sorry, Mr. Music Intelligentsia Reviewer
by Defender90CAOne guesses the producers understood that most people who purchased the soundtrack from HTWWW would EXPECT the songs Debbie Reynolds sings in the film to be included. Whether you think those numbers jibe with the Newman score, they were PART of the film itself, so obviously they should be included. Feel free to hit the FWD key on your iPod, though.
An American Classic
by MJR53There are certain themes in film that inspire. Courage, fortitude, patriotism are chief among them and I cannot ever listen to Alfred Newman's score for How The West Was Won without feeling those inspired emotions. His orchestration is superb throughout, but most particularly in the Main Title. I am a native westerner (Wyoming) and when I hear the rolling percussion in the Main Title, I see the tall grass of the prairies, the lonely cavalry posts on the western frontier, the herds of buffalo and the progress of the transcontinental railroad. Newman found the precise mix of instruments, of brass, of percussion, of strings and also some great folk singers (The Whiskeyhill Singers for one) to embody the grandeur of the American West in 19th Century. The film, the cast, the story and the music all stand as American Classics!
Great movie- Neat soundtrack
by sister2002I am 17 years old and I love the old movies- they have such dignity in them then these new movies- This movie though I think should be shown in schools everywhere. I believe that it shows what life was really like with out the gore. It probably pacifies what it was like in some scenes but its just a great movie with a neat soundtrack. Some really neat old time songs. I highly recomend the movie- its on DVD on ebay for $10.00. OSme great, great actors are in it- John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Andy Divine, and Gregory Peck, and Debbie Reynolds. (sorry if I spelt any names wrong,)
