Album Review

Out of the ashes of a group called Trip Shakespeare comes Semisonic, three guys who share a heavy melodic sense. Combining traditional rock instruments with ambient noise and electronic wizardry, they concoct an appealing sound anchored deep in rock and roll. "If I Run" is a gorgeous tune while "FNT" (which stands for "Fascinating New Thing") has hooks galore. A must for any serious fan of rock & roll with a twist.

F.N.T

FNT is the one off of the album I want to point out, because it is awesome in every way and MUCH better than Closing Time! It's catchy and is fun to listen to and is actually cheerful, unlike Closing Time. Don't get me wrong, I like Closing Time, it's just that it doesn't deserve more fame than FNT does.

Great album!

Criminally overlooked

Semisonic hadn't had their big breakout with Feeling Strangely Fine and "Closing Time" yet when this album came out. They already deserved the attention, though. The bigger guitar sounds and harmonies of "F.N.T." (fascinating new thing) and "Delicious" give a nod to Trip Shakespeare, but Dan Wilson's gorgeous songwriting is as fully developed on "If I Run," "Brand New Baby" and a lot of the second "side" of the album as it would be on their blockbuster second release. If you enjoy other Semisonic stuff or just guitar rock with great hooks this album fits the bill!

Semisonic: greatest sleeper hits, 90's to today

by Pokeweed

Most people know Semisonic from their one (frankly overplayed) song "Closing Time", but this their first full album had two hits that were popular in many major states and cities (particularly southern..big in North and South Carolina), Detroit and Seattle. Those songs are F.N.T. and If I run. I love this album. It's dwarfed only by their follow-up album Feeling Strangley Fine, which is one of the few CD's I can listed to from the first to last track without skipping one.
