iTunes Review

A Band of Bees hail from the Isle of Wight and trade in a peculiarly British brand of musical nostalgia that values aesthetics over content and clever songwriting over originality. Where Ray Davies once crafted tales of the British working class from the detritus of tin pan alley schmaltz and American R&B in order to express his longing for an era that never was, A Band of Bees are content to replicate the heady sounds of British psychedelia, directly copying the tricky tempo changes and childish whimsy of early Pink Floyd, late era Pretty Things, and Davies’ own Kinks. Yet despite their revivalist stance A Band of Bees are undeniably skilled at their craft, and when the trill harmonies and freakbeat guitars of the infectious “A Glass of Water” come singing over the hi-fi the listener will be hard pressed to believe that this music was recorded in 2007 rather than in 1967. Though one wants to fault A Band of Bees for their stubborn adherence to an outdated sound, their compositions are so winningly contrived that even the most inflexible of would-be critics will be forced to smile at Free the Bees’ vintage tones, sparkling melodies and cunning arrangements. And the album boasts at least one legitimate masterwork: the swooning ballad “I Love You” is a song of such beauty that it manages to transcend The Bees somewhat rote revivalism.

Great Fun!

This album is not only authentic sounding, but it's fun!! It's the best of both worlds. Fresh new vibe meets old country blues. I love the Rolling Stone's vibe in hourglass. =)
I can't pick a favorite since each song is awesome in it's own way, but if I had to it would be either Horsemen or Hourglass.

Vintage Heart & Soul.

The Bees Uk aka Band of Bees. They have come a long way from their initial sample/loop outing to this ode to FM Masterpiece. Every single song on this album is good. All killer no filler as they used to say. I tend to gravitate towards the more kooky hook tracks like "Go Karts" because it reminds me of the dark side of the Beatles. "One Glass of Water" is 60's pop perfection. "I Love You" reminds me of the Association. Man, I miss the sort of tender innocence and musicianship classic music offers over today's empty sample filled headache inducing hip hop crap the radio spews today. Songs about "b*****s, rims, money & murder" is a sad observation of what we perceive as true music these days. I just close my eyes and go back in time to when music made you feel better, not want to grab a gun(or some aspirin).

Killer Bees!

An absolute delight from beginning to end. Fun, smart and unbelievably listenable. Great album from a very cool band.
