Album Review
The debut album from piano-playing Ben Folds' smart-a*s trio is a potent, and extremely fun, collection of postmodern rock ditties that comes off as a pleasantly workable combination of Tin Pan Alley showmanship, Todd Rundgren-style power pop, and myriad alt-rock sensibilities. The gimmick here is that not a single guitar was used on the 12 songs; but the way that Folds and his bandmates unravel their instruments (piano, bass, and drums make up this combo), even the most hardened noise enthusiasts will hardly miss it (it's the melodies that carry this album, and Folds has plenty of them up his sleeve). Some of it is a bit coy — Folds plays the joker as much as he does the musician — but with the dead-on "Underground," they manage to skewer, and pay loving tribute, to the oh-so-hip indie scene from which they came.

Ben Folds, a musical genius
by JdubbluBen Folds is such an amazing artist! I absolutely love the way he can throw his emotions on the page with such a musical, and relatable way. Many of his songs can exert everyday problems and situations people can relate to and understand. I hope we hear more from this band in the future as far as CD's goes because they are really amazing =)
Great Piano!
by vanhalen#1I think Ben Folds is one of the greatest artists around. This is his debut album, and arguably his best. I especially enjoy Jackson Cannery, Philosophy, Alice Childress, and Underground. The piano solos are all fantastic, and Big Ben definitely deserves 5 stars for this one.
