iTunes Review

Picking up where Big Hits left off, this collection, released just months after Brian Jones' July 1969 death, is both testimony to a band flexing its muscles and the closing of a chapter. Even with that and with a couple of songs that had appeared on two other U.S. albums, this avoids any exploitative feel — "Honky Tonk Women" (at the time a big hit), "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and the thrilling "Dandelion" had not been on any albums at that point. Indeed, a summation of the development from Aftermath through Beggars Banquet was called for, tracing the run from post-blues explorations into psychedelia ("Paint it Black," "Ruby Tuesday," "2000 Light Years From Home") and back to the roots with new character and confidence ("Honky Tonk Women," "Street Fighting Man"). This is a release that undeniably stands on its own considerable merits.

Essential Rock Music

by mrrockandroll

No music collection would be complete without each and every song on "Through The Past Darkly (Big Hits Volume 2)". Whether you amass these 12 tracks from this US version or from one of the other many Stones compilations available doesn't really matter. What does matter, though, is that anyone who wants to know about, or understand, rock and roll music should be familiar with every one of these songs. Make sure not to dismiss the lesser known tracks (i.e. "2000 Light Years From Home," "Dandelion") since they're just as essential as the big hits and still demonstrate Jagger & Richards' creative genius.

This has been my favorite Stones album...mostly because my dad would play it all the time in the car (I'm a younger Rolling Stones fan ^^;). It has quite a collection, about half of them being fairly popular as far as I know. "She's a Rainbow", though, is my personal favorite.

By the time the Rolling Stones began calling themselves the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the late '60s, they had already staked out an impressive claim on the title. As the self-consciously dangerous alternative to the bouncy Merseybeat of the Beatles in the British Invasion, the Stones had...
