Album Review

At this point in time, pianist Brad Mehldau's style falls between Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans, being heavily influenced by the voicings of the latter and the free yet lyrical improvising of the former. With fine backup work by bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy, Mehldau explores five standards (including the Beatles' "Blackbird" and "Nobody Else but Me") and four originals, coming up with melodic yet adventurous ideas. Mehldau displays much potential for the future.

Never get tired of it

This is one of those rare albums that I listen to on repeat. It's phenomenal and captures the energy that the trio brings to their live shows. I orignally bought this album for the Radiohead track but, as it turns out, every track is a 10.

Great Album

This is my favorite Mehldau album to date.

Brad's version of All the Things You Are is one of the most impressive interpretations I have ever heard of a very tough tune (to sound original on). Sensucht is one of my favorite Mehldau compositions. London Blues has a much more comfortable tempo for me than the original and Brad's solo on Exit Music is great, I really enjoyed that he opened it up more and had a stronger groove. You can catch a bit of rock and roll influence in Solar as well as Larry's killer bass solo.

Overall this is my strongest recommendation for a CD!

True Style

by JClassic

In my oppinion Brad Mehldau's style has been wrongly described as being like that of the great Bill Evans. This is something I consider a knee jerk and uneducated classification which is often assigned to white male piano jazz performers.

In truth his style is more reminiscent of an early Herbie Hancock with mild Monkish undertones. His use broken melody and abstract frasing is very similar indeed.

One need only listen to Herbie's trio album "third plane" to understand what I am saying.

Biography

Genre: Jazz

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Brad Mehldau was another of the plethora of young jazz pianists in the '90s to adopt Bill Evans as their role model. Yet while the influence of Evans still thoroughly dominates Mehldau's introspective manner, harmonic constructions, and preferred format (the piano trio), he is one of the more absorbing...
