Stunning debut

by Michael Berch

It's fair to say that you probably haven't heard anyone whose music sounds like Maggie Osterberg's. Some of her titles and lyrics let you know who she listens to -- from Lou Reed and King Crimson to electronica and alt-pop -- but it's all processed through a unique sensibility that's part digital bitpusher and part guitar/keyboard wizard, sometimes funny, sometimes sad, always original. This debut album by the Midwestern songwriter covers the full spectrum from acoustic (the allusive and evocative "Stamen Island Ferry") to psychedelic ("LoveMon (Big Guitars)" and "Goin' to a Party"), with plenty of serious rockin' in between. "Mystery Turtle" stands out as a hit, with an infectious beat and the most sonic layers since the Beatles left the studio. There are not too many artists -- Kate Bush comes to mind here -- with a strong creative voice coupled with technical mastery of a large repertory of techniques, but that's what's going on here. Keep an eye on Maggie Osterberg.
