iTunes Review

An album of rare honesty and bare-bones power, Bring the Family almost didn't happen. Between record deals, John Hiatt recorded these tracks as demos in a mere four days; the results were so good that they were released by A&M in 1987 to immediate critical acclaim. Part of the album's magic is the chemistry Hiatt's achieves with guitarist Ry Cooder, bassist Nick Lowe, and drummer Jim Keltner. But it's the confessional songwriting that cuts especially deep here. Hiatt deals with his alcoholism and troubled marriage without flinching in tracks like "Alone in the Dark" and "Learning How to Love You." "A Thing Called Love" and "Memphis in the Meantime" rock with abandon, while the ballad "Have a Little Faith in Me" soars with gospel grace. Bring the Family captures an artist wrestling with his demons and rediscovering his muse. The results are an unqualified triumph.

"Little Village", anyone, anyone?

iTunes neglected to mention that there's a whole other album with these same four guys, "Little Village." The band's name is also the title of the album. If you like this one, you'll love that one.

This is one of Hiatt's best, hand's down. Working with Ry Cooder, Nick Lowe & Jim Keltner likely had a lot to do with the stellar outcome, but it's Hiatt's songwriting that's truly superb.

This is one that gets better the more listens; more meaningful, more personal, more spiritual.

By the way, these guys got together about half a decade later to do it again! Check out Little Village's eponymous 1st album. If you've not heard it, you're in for a real treat.

Now all iTunes needs to do is make his other 5-star album, "Walk On," available. Keep on truckin' John. Thanks for the great songs.

Everyone should own

Great CD. BTW, the huge Hootie CD "Cracked Rear View" is a line from learning how to love you. Great bar bet trivia

John Hiatt's sales have never quite matched his reputation. Hiatt's songs were covered successfully by everyone from Bonnie Raitt, Ronnie Milsap, and Dr. Feelgood to Iggy Pop, Three Dog Night, and the Neville Brothers, yet it took him 13 years to reach the charts himself. Of course, it nearly took him...
