iTunes Review

Basking in the glow of new motherhood, a rejuvenated Madonna returned to studio album-making with 1998’s Ray of Light. The Material Girl of the ‘80s was transformed into an Ethereal Woman, wrapping herself in William Orbit’s electronica-influenced production and embracing spiritual lyric themes. As always, though, she kept a grip on the groove, grounding the sometimes spacey feel of the tracks with a firm sense of rhythm. The album’s title tune overlays dense sonic atmospherics upon a relentless beat to mesmerizing effect, while “To Have and Not to Hold” simmers with bossa nova fire. Her ballads are equally strong, particularly the moody “Frozen” and “Drowned World/The Power of Goodbye.” Introspective tunes like “Substitute for Love” display a maturity and depth only hinted at on earlier releases. Ray of Light proved a turning-point in Madonna’s career. With this shimmering, self-revelatory album, she renewed her hip credentials and raised her music to a higher plane.

Although I am not a huge Madonna fan, I do have to say that this album is very impressive. From the depth of the lyrics to the amazing atmospheric sounds and beats, each aspect of this album is truly remarkable. This is one album of few in which I enjoyed each song and what it had to offer.

This is a must-have album. If not, at least get:

-Frozen
-Ray of Light
-Power of Goodbye
-Sky Fits Heaven
-Substitute for Love

Easily Madonna's best!

After a star reaches a certain point, it's easy to forget what they became famous for and concentrate solely on their persona. Madonna is such a star. Madonna rocketed to stardom so quickly in 1984 that it obscured most of her musical virtues. Appreciating her music became even more difficult as the...
