Album Review

Slower, smoother, and more soulful than Portishead and less pop-oriented than the Sneaker Pimps, Morcheeba have an alluringly dark sound that nevertheless remains accessible. As their debut, Who Can You Trust?, illustrates, the trio has a keen sense of how to make a pop melody seem dangerous and foreign by having it crawl out of the murk of creeping beats and ominous samples. Although the group lacks the visionary spark of Tricky and Portishead, and their songs aren't as bracing as the Sneaker Pimps, Morcheeba have a distinctive, idiosyncratic sound that makes Who Can You Trust? entrancing. Although the latter half of the album tends to sound a little samey, without many beats or hooks to distinguish each song, the album remains a hauntingly atmospheric — and quite terrific — debut.

A definite sleeper

I'm way into trip-hop, bands like Zero 7, DJ Shadow, Portishead, etc. are my all-time favorites. I've gotten a lot of recommendations for Morcheeba from friends with similar music tastes, but I never really caught on to Morcheeba's sound and I didn't really think their music was all that good. But then on a whim I bought Who Can You Trust? along with Beats & B-Sides (the album you see here) and listened to it. It definitely didn't blow me away the first time I listened to it, or even the second time. But something kept me listening, and the more I listened to the album, the more I loved it. And now, it's one of my favorite albums ever - Skye Edwards has possibly the most beautiful singing voice of any band in modern times.

Morcheeba nailed the soulful groove that's reminiscent of a more accessible Portishead and their songs are absolutely great. "Moog Island" is far and away my favorite song off the album, but "Trigger Hippie" and "Tape Loop" are a couple great alternates. The second half of the album tends to drag a bit because the songs start sounding samey but regardless the album is top-notch. I also highly recommending getting the Beats & B-sides bonus CD because the three original songs on that CD are fantastic, and anything the Diabolical Brothers remix is absolutely stellar (especially their remix of Tape Loop). All in all, Morcheeba achieved something great with this album, and in my opinion this is their best work.

FANTASTIC ALBUM - WORTH EVERY PENNY!

I am age 50-something and was turned onto Morcheeba by my daughter - I play this album constantly on my ipod, in the car, at my desk...wonderfully upbeat, soothing, mellow, and jazzy. I love all the tracks on the album however, if I had to choose only one it would have to be Moog Island although Small Town and Never An Easy Way are also big favorites. This whole album is wonderfully addictive!

You Say Trip-Hop. I say," Who Can You Trust"

Compare all other Trip-hop to this album. Because it's the best one To date! Why does the review talk about Portishead and Sneaker Pimps. What! not even close to as good as Morcheeba's work. As for the B-sides some are good but why mess with Paul Godfrey's Magic?

Biography

Formed: 1995 in London, England

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '90s, '00s

The most groove-oriented act in the mid-'90s female-fronted electronica crowd, Morcheeba rely on the sweet, fluid vocals of Skye Edwards and a laid-back mix of fusion, funk, and blues produced by brothers Paul and Ross Godfrey, on beats/scratches and guitar/keyboards, respectively. The trio was formed...
