Album Review

A good overview of Strait's first round of MCA chartbusters from the early '80s, it includes "Right or Wrong," "Amarillo by Morning," "You Look So Good in Love," "Fool Hearted Memory," "A Fire I Can't Put Out," "Let's Fall to Pieces Together," and several other hits. ~ Mark A. This album is a flash back to my childhood in Madisonville, TX Horse capitol of Texas. There wasn't a kid at my high school that didn't have this on cassette in his or her Ford or Chevy truck! Great times. George Strait is one in a million. The real deal, and true people of the land know it and respect him for it. Don't miss out on his early hits b/c they're just as important as what he's delighting us with today.

This Is the Strait Stuff

Every song here stands out for the impassioned singing that marked George Strait's early career. Regret tinges the dancehall classics A Fire I Can't Put Out and the rodeo tale Amarillo By Morning, as well as the otherwise sparkling waltz You Look So Good In Love; the smooth Marina Del Rey and Fool Hearted Memory take on a more nostalgic tone; Right or Wrong is as sprightly as its two-step tempo; and he seeks redemption on the catchy If You're Thinking You Want a Stranger. Unwound; Down and Out; and Let's Fall to Pieces Together add their tales of heartbreak, but their places could easily have been filled by any number of other outstanding tracks from those first three albums, such as the heart-cracking Honky Tonk Down Stairs (or the lighter Blame It On Mexico or Friday Night Fever).

I love the three albums sampled here, which with Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind almost single-handedly revived and modernized traditional fiddle-and-steel country music, reshaping the landscape for years to come.

Out of all the new country singers to emerge in the early '80s, George Strait stayed the closest to traditional country. Drawing from both the honky tonk and Western swing traditions, Strait didn't refashion the genres; instead, he revitalized them for a new decade. In the process, he became one of the...
