iTunes Review
Steve Winwood had made his name as a young musical wunderkind, fronting the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic and Blind Faith (with Eric Clapton) and recording with Jimi Hendrix on his Electric Ladyland album. His fusion of jazz, blues, pop and psychedelia combined with a soulful voice that drew comparisons to Ray Charles gave him a prestige beyond his twenty-something years. By the time of his second solo album, 1981’s Arc of a Diver, Winwood was nearly an old-hand. Over 30 and like many of his generation facing an unsure musical future, Winwood turned out this eminently catchy collection of tunes that modernized his sound without sacrificing his heartfelt soul. “Slowdown Sundown” recalls the dramatic ends of Traffic. The album’s hit single “While You See A Chance” is positively infectious, while the title track, “Second-Hand Woman,“ and “Night Train“ sport bright, energetic grooves that only slightly overdrive into the ‘80s. (The synthesizers are tastefully applied.) Winwood would continue to reinvent his sound and reputation for the rest of the decade.

Arc of a Diver Stands the Test of TIme
by The MorganTThis is one of my all-time favorites! 20 years later this Album is better than I remembered! Arc of a Diver (the song) and Spanish dancer both have deeper forays into the mystical, magical movement. Night Train and While You See a Chance provide solid, artful rock-N-Roll stalwarts. Second-Hand Woman is a crafty, double-entendre filled gem, of a class with ZZ Tops' Pearl Necklace. For his fans and those that listen to the words, this is a classic. Enjoy!!!
Very Great Solo Work, but not 5 Star Worthy
by Electric VisionsNo, this is not a five star album. Stop trying to offset the other non-five star review with bullocks.
However, that's not to say there isn't a note-worthy track on Arc of a Diver. While You See a Chance and Arc of a Diver are some of the better 80's adult contemporary tracks I've heard, Night Train establishes itself as a solid rock track (for Winwood anyways) and Dust finishes off the album pretty well.
However, that being said, compared to Winwood's later works, Arc of a Diver is definitely not grearest hits material and though memorable, it's not surprising why Arc isn't the most well-known piece of Winwood's library. Like another reviewer suggested, go for his later work (About Time) or the greatest hits CDs. It's not that great, people.
