iTunes Review
The album cover’s rose of the same name ended up a perennial Dead trademark, but more to the point is how American Beauty’s title sums up its ethos. After capturing its freewheeling impulses on the likes of Anthem of the Sun and Live/Dead, the band reeled it all in for a controlled cohesion that allowed the players to nail down what might be their most gorgeous album. (Its acoustic instrumentation recalls nothing so much as the Band’s then-recent self-titled set.) “Box of Rain” and “Ripple” were philosophical gems whose reassurances went far beyond hippie talk; the latter’s play with blues and gospel iconography put the song at nice odds with the Dead’s outlaw mythos. Elsewhere, there’s praise for a “Sugar Magnolia” who “pays my ticket when I speed,” and the eternal “Truckin’,” a strong bemused glance at the road life and its hazards. The remastered sound reveals one of the most crisply recorded outfits of its era. This edition’s bonus tracks include a passel of live versions, a single edit of “Truckin’” and a tongue-in-cheek radio ad.

Grateful Dead
by daboz01The epitome of any era of rock that's still fresh many years later. This album reminds older listeners why they bought it in the first place and gives the younger a better understanding of one of rocks greatest ground breaking bands. Thanks Jerry!
Introduction to the Grateful Dead
by NiciunBefore Touch of Grey became a radio hit, this was the album most people first heard by the dead, and its still usuallyt he one people think of first. If you've never listened to the GD before, and want to see what its all about, this is a good place to start
I'm not a deadhead......
by Humble Floyd......or even a big fan. I saw the "Warlocks" in the early 60's turn into the 'Dead" and watched them dozens of times for free in '60's San Francisco. I never liked the "jam band" concept, or the cult that grew up around them. BUT, as a musician with an apreciation of good music I cannot deny that they had moments of clarity aproaching genius. "Working Mans Dead" and especially "American Beauty" are truely gems. This is an album you can put on and let run through without skipping a track. There are no 'clinkers'.
I don't have much music from the Dead, but this album is just too good to ignore.
