Album Review

Walsh's catalog by this point was two albums strong and of a consistently high quality. Despite a change of staff for So What — a wide range of musicians are used, including the Eagles' Don Henley — the sound is very similar to previous releases. A number of classic Joe Walsh tracks are featured including a more polished version of "Turn to Stone", originally featured on Walsh's debut album Barnstorm in a somewhat more riotous style. "Help Me Thru The Night", Joe Walsh's mellowest song to date, is helped along by some fine lead and backing vocals from the band.

So What sees Joe Walsh in top gear as a guitarist. Most of the nine tracks feature solos of unquestionable quality in his usual rock style. The classic rock genre that the man so well defined with his earlier albums is present here throughout, and it is pulled off with the usual unparalleled Joe Walsh ability.

So What? All killer no filler, that's what!

Before Joe Walsh's great sense of humor and career with the Eagles overshadowed his obvious compositional, songwriting, guitar playing, singing, and production genius, there was the James Gang followed by his three early Seventies solo albums "Barnstorm", ""The Smoker..." and "So What". I consider "So What" to be the best of that early work. The three real rockers are the opener "Welcome to the Club", the re-made "Turn to Stone" with different vocal phrasing and less slash and burn guitar arrangments than the Barnstorm version, and "Time Out" got some good airplay from the AOR stations at the time of release. These and the whole album's strength have a lot to do with the space between the notes and not beating the listener over the head with a barrage of notes and chords like a musical 2x4 and reveal Joe's taste and maturity as an artist. The aforementioned humor is very evident in the jokey mini-ditty "All Night Laundromat Blues","Time Out" and "Welcome to the Club" but they contain a lot of truth about the complexities and struggle of modern life as well. "Falling Down", "Song for Emma" and "County Fair" are more ballad-y and serious with non-boring great arrangments which I would be hard pressed to say the same about many other ballads of the era. All in all you can listen to the whole album from start to finish easily and that seems to be harder and harder for me to do with many other artist's albums.

Classic Joe Walsh

I was shopping for a new stereo in 1976 and my older brother went with me to check out a couple of systems. He said to the salesman put on "So What" , I couldn't believe the sound and I immediately enjoyed the music. Classic Joe Walsh, spent many evenings getting away from the books by listening to this album. Great variety, incredible guitar, probably his best vocals ever.

One of the Best Hits Missing?

This album is great, tons of great hits and such, but come on, really, no Life's Been Good? That has to be Joe Walsh's second greatest hit after Rocky Mountain Way....iTunes, your making a big mistake here!
