Description
Vicinity is the ultimate guide to your surroundings.
It provides one tap access to nearby services and amenities such as bars, restaurants, taxis, takeouts and gas stations. Vicinity also utilizes your location to display nearby Wikipedia articles and photographs from both flickr and Panoramio, providing a useful source of education and interesting places to visit.
The location list shows all the places and their distance from you in real time, and is sorted so you can quickly select the nearest. Simply tap an item to view details and photos, visit websites, phone or get directions.
Combining hundreds of data sources, Vicinity is one of the most comprehensive location based applications to date.
What's New in Version 2.0.5
Fixed a bug where visiting a category for the 3rd time would crash the application
Small UI improvements in item details screens
Fixed data issues that resulted in blank results for a small minority of users

Needs Work
The concept exactly what I am looking for, allowing you to find what you need quickly without having to type out everything in Google Maps. However, I found a few issues with this app that make it basically useless for me. First, for some reason the locator doesn't seem to work as well as the Google Maps version (I have a non-GPS iphone). For this reason, the search results weren't as close to my location as Google Maps provides. Since I don't have GPS I can forgive this. However, the database services and amenities seems severely lacking. I live in NYC, and when searching for nearby restaurants/bars it gave me listings that were miles away. Considering the fact that I had dozens of restaurants within two blocks of me, it made the results useless for me. I am thinking that this app is decent if you are in a pinch while travelling, but for dense city environments the local search results have clearly not been optimized.
Not for American users
The richer (and free) mobile Yellowpages app does the same thing, and does it better. Unless you're a Panaramio addict, skip this one. I wish I did!
Not recommended for city dwellers.
Vicinity is a great idea--which is why it's being implemented by other developers with similar applications. I got this one because I was attracted to its simple interface, but for a paid app, Vicinity falls far short of the mark for me and anyone else who lives in the city. Due either to a dearth of source material or a lack of understanding of the nature of urban environments (probably both), Vicinity is nearly entirely worthless in the city, as it suggests "nearby" bars that are located in completely different boroughs and banks that are in, believe it or not, other states. Yes, Jersey City is "only" 10 miles from NYC, but there's a big honking river between me and there, and if I want to know where the closest coffee shop is to me, it's going to need to be on the order of 100 yards away, not 5 miles. ActiveGuru, I hope you're paying attention, because I would appreciate a functionality upgrade for my $3.
