Simply the best calc app for the iphone
I used to own a Pocket PC (before it was stolen and I moved to an iPhone). I regretted nothing about moving to an iPhone except having to give up my one truly indispensible application on the PocketPC, namely SpaceTime. I lamented its absence from the iPhone ever since. Now its here and available! It is a programming tour-de-force, and really does provide a substantial subset of the functionality of desktop powerhouses like Mathematica and Maple. To compare it to a "calculator" is somewhat like comparing a racing car to a road bike. Vastly different leagues. It would arguably be worth the "price of admission" if all it offered was its graphing capabilities and nothing else. That it offers everything a conventional scientific calculator does plus a full suite of symbolic algebra functionality is a rich frosting on the cake. I applaud the programming team for developing an extraordinary little program, and for making it available to a broader community. It matches or exceeeds an HP-50g or Ti-89 for pure functionality, yet is offered for a fraction of the cost. If you are an engineer or scientist, or anyone in search of a full function scientific calculator/plotter/symbolic manipulator, you've found your iPhone dream app.
SpaceTime 4.0.2
One week after purchase, I remain very impressed. I am looking forward to plumbing the depths of functionality for months and years with this app. A more comprehensive manual would be much appreciated, especially with more details aimed at the iTouch/iPhone users.
Mathematica for the iPhone
This is why I bought an iPhone. This app replaced my TI-89 and has a lot of the functionality of programs like Mathematica or Matlab. Every graphing calculator and math tool up until this point in the App store has been very amatuerish and rough around the edges (I've downloaded/bought them all. This one is the real deal professional app I'd been waiting for. Touch functionality is well integrated. My only gripe is that hitting the keys at the bottom of the screen like '+' result in accidentally hitting one of the menu choices at the bottom like options or catalog. Maybe move options to the top and get rid of the clock.
Update: After several weeks of use this has mostly taken the place of my TI-89. I'm still giving a 5 because I use the app constantly. And think it's top notch -- buy it!!!. These are the things that bug me but aren't deal breakers. Accidental keys are still a problem.get rid of clock with option switch. An option to turn on click feedback. A left and right parenthesis without using iPhone default keyboard. When compared to the TI-89 the output often results in ugly or incomplete simplification/cleanup of the algebra on things like derivatives or more complex expressions. Often times only shows the increasing part of an equation that has a polynomial under a radical AND to a power such as x^(5/8). I'd like to see an easier way to swipe and delete lines I'd no longer like to use. I'd like to see the catalog have a detail page for each entry (blue arrow) like the address book with syntax examples and documentation for each function. Some weird blank screen issues when rotating phone and going back to the entry screen. Would like it to be easier to set xmin xmax ymin ymax, currently have to delete a long number string. Would like to see the Table have quick buttons to set step to 1.Overall very pleased. The premier math app in the store well worth $20+. Look forward to updates.
Update (06/27/2009):
The developers of this app have addressed almost all of my concerns and moved Spacetime to 4.0 beta. The GUI has been made iPhone friendly. I use this app daily in my computer science studies. I'm gushing but I wish I could give it 6 stars. My professor want's a Touch now for it.
